Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?

Root canals are generally recommended for patients who are suffering from an infection or severe damage to the pulp of a tooth, or the center portion that houses delicate blood vessels and nerve endings. While these situations are generally painful, it’s also possible for a patient to feel little to no discomfort. Some of the tell-tale signs you might need root canal treatment include:

  • Severe pain when biting or chewing
  • Deep decay or darkening of the gums
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Lingering tooth sensitivity to hot or cold

The Root Canal Process

To determine if a root canal is the best course of action, Dr. Sudeep will take a series of diagnostic images to assess the tooth and scope out any present infection. If an infection is discovered, she will perform root canal treatment to assist the tooth, and by doing so, allow you to keep it as opposed to needing to undergo possible extraction!

After your mouth is numbed, special instruments can be used to access the inner chamber of the tooth and remove the compromised tissue that’s causing your pain. After this has been done, the tooth can be sanitized and then filled with a biocompatible material to help retain its shape. From there, the tooth can be sealed and protected with a dental crown, which helps to fully restore it in terms of look, feel, and functionality.

The Benefits of Getting a Root Canal

Aside from allowing you to keep your natural tooth, there are several other benefits that a root canal has to offer, including:

  • Root canals are designed to address the source of your pain, and you can expect a virtually pain-free procedure thanks to modern techniques and local anesthesia.
  • Root canal treatment allows you to maintain a healthy bite and oral function, while also safeguarding your dental health moving forward, since the source of the infection is removed.
  • In the long run, root canal treatment is cost-effective, especially compared to the cost of needing a tooth extracted and replaced.
