How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is a cutting-edge orthodontic treatment system that is designed to straighten teeth without the bracket and wire components of traditional braces. The treatment is comprised of a series of clear trays that are made uniquely for each patient, moving the teeth into a straighter position with each aligner.

If we determine you are a great candidate for Invisalign, she will take impressions of your teeth and use special software to create your aligners. During your course of treatment, you'll be given new aligners every two weeks or so. Swap these out as prescribed and attend your checkups every six to eight weeks, and you’ll have a straighter smile in no time!

Who Can Invisalign Help?

Invisalign is suitable for a wide range of patients, including those struggling with mild overbites and moderate overcrowding. That said, the only way to learn if Invisalign is right for you is by attending a thorough consultation with Dr. Sudeep. In the meantime, read on to learn some common orthodontic problems clear aligners can correct.

Crowded Teeth

If your teeth crowd together to the point that they overlap, then you already know how difficult it can be to brush and floss. You’re not alone. In fact, even patients with more mild cases of malocclusion are prone to tooth decay and gum disease. That’s why we recommend exploring your treatment options, like Invisalign! If you’re a candidate, then we can align your teeth with clear, comfortable aligners.

Gaps Between Teeth

Although spaced out teeth are essentially the opposite problem, they pose similar issues, including an increased risk of cavities. Fortunately, Invisalign is usually an option for patients with mild to moderate cases. So, don’t just assume that traditional braces are your only option! With a custom series of clear aligners, we can close the gaps, giving you a healthier and more beautiful smile.

Overbite

Although your upper teeth should sit in front of your lower ones, problems can arise if they jut out too far. In fact, many patients with overbites struggle to smile confidently and enunciate clearly. The good news is that Invisalign has proven to be effective at correcting common bite problems as well. So, if your bite isn’t aligned properly, take the next step: schedule a consultation with us.

Underbite

What if your lower teeth sit in front of your upper ones? Is Invisalign an option? It’s possible. Although the only way to know for certain is by scheduling a consultation, many patients have used Invisalign to correct this common bite problem. So, your road to a straighter, healthier smile may not involve any metal at all!

Crossbite

If some – but not all – of your upper teeth sit behind your lower ones, you may have a crossbite. Although this bite problem isn’t as talked about, it can negatively impact your life in more ways than one. Luckily, Invisalign aligners are often a solution, particularly when they are used in tandem with additional orthodontic accessories, like rubber bands and buttons.

Open Bite

When you bite down, your upper and lower teeth should come together evenly. If they don’t, then you likely have an open bite. One of our biggest concerns is that more pressure is placed on certain teeth, increasing the chances of your enamel chipping or cracking. With Invisalign, we can guide your bite into a healthier position, potentially saving you from a serious dental injury.

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to align your smile and correct a variety of bite issues. Thanks to its discreet appearance, unprecedented comfort, and shorter treatment duration, Invisalign is perfect for teens and adults who don’t want to deal with the hassle of traditional braces. If you’re curious about what makes Invisalign such an excellent choice, keep reading to learn more about its many benefits!

Discreet Trays

One of the top reasons why adults and teenagers alike choose Invisalign over traditional braces is because of its discreet appearance. The clear aligners are less noticeable when you smile or speak, making it a lot less likely that anyone will comment on or even notice that you’re undergoing treatment. Better still, if you’ve got an important upcoming event such as wedding, graduation, or work presentation, you can still wear your trays without worrying about them being the main focus of your smile like braces might be.

Improved Comfort

In addition to their discreet appearance, clear aligners are more comfortable than braces, too. That’s because unlike metal wires and brackets that can scrape against or irritate the lips and cheeks, Invisalign trays are smooth. While you may still experience some discomfort when you advance to a new set of aligners, this typically only lasts a few days, and switching at bedtime can help you minimize pain by allowing you to sleep through the most challenging moments. Thankfully, this pain is usually mild enough to be well-managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen if necessary.

Better Dental Hygiene

When you wear traditional braces, it can be challenging to floss between and around your orthodontic equipment, but with Invisalign your aligners can be easily removed to make brushing and flossing much easier and more effective.

While you will need to brush and floss more frequently with Invisalign (after each meal), having full access to your teeth makes it much easier and less time-consuming. This also means you’ll have a lower risk of developing cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems during your treatment. You also won’t need to purchase any special dental hygiene equipment to ensure that you’ve effectively cleaned your teeth.

Boosted Self-Confidence

Because your Invisalign aligners are transparent, they’re much more discreet than metal wires and brackets. This means it’s much easier to maintain a professional appearance at work, during job interviews, and in important meetings with clients.

For teenagers, having a smile that’s less clunky looking can help make key years of their social development less stressful and anxiety provoking, making it much easier for them to build new friendships and socialize with their peers. It can even make them feel more confident in their school photos, during class presentations, and even on their social media posts.

Non-Invasive Treatment

Invisalign treatment is considered much less invasive than traditional braces because it requires fewer alterations to your day-to-day lifestyle and routines. You can continue to brush and floss your teeth like you did before treatment, eat your favorite foods without hesitation, and attend important life events without the fear of being photographed in braces.

Furthermore, the shorter check-in visits with your dentist and the flexibility of the treatment make it much easier for patients with busy schedules, whether they’re due to school, work, or extracurricular activities.

Faster Follow-Ups

With Invisalign, your check-in appointments are only necessary every six to eight weeks, and typically only last between 15 and 30 minutes.

These visits are also much more comfortable and less involved than check-ups for traditional braces, too. They are mainly to ensure that you are staying on track with your treatment timeline, and that your teeth are moving as anticipated.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

Invisalign FAQs

How Do I Clean My Invisalign Aligners?

Since Invisalign aligners are removable and don’t require any special dental care products, they are easy to clean! The first habit we recommend adopting is rinsing them with clean, cool water each time you take them off (this will help prevent saliva from hardening on the surface). We also recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, mild dishwashing liquid to clean them after each meal.

Important note: Do NOT use bleach or any other harsh household cleaners! It’s also crucial that you check the temperature of the water beforehand because it will warp the plastic if it’s too hot.

What Should I Do If I Lose One of My Invisalign Aligners?

First, try retracing your steps to see if you can find them. If you’ve looked everywhere you can think of, but you don’t have any success, give our Sunnyvale dental team a call. The sooner you do, the sooner we can find a solution and get you back on-track with your treatment plan.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

On average, Invisalign treatment plans fall between 12 and 18 months. Of course, it’s possible for yours to be shorter or longer. The two biggest factors that play a role in the length of your orthodontic treatment are the severity of your case and how well you follow the guidelines provided, like wearing your aligners for 20+ hours a day. With all of that said, we will provide you with an estimate at your consultation so you have a general idea of how long it will take to achieve the results you desire.

Does Invisalign Hurt?

Remember, Invisalign aligners are completely metal-free. Not only that, but they are custom-made to fit the contours of your teeth perfectly. So, you don’t have to worry about soft tissue irritation or mouth sores! Plus, any soreness or discomfort that arises from the movement of your teeth is temporary and can be alleviated quickly with OTC pain medication.

Can I Drink Coffee with Invisalign?

You cannot drink coffee while you’re wearing your aligners. You can, however, enjoy this caffeinated beverage with your breakfast or an afternoon snack since your trays will already be out!

What Happens After Invisalign?

Once you’ve worked through your series of clear aligners, we’ll take your “after” photos as well as impressions of your teeth so we can have a custom retainer made. This is a crucial step of the treatment process because – without your retainer – your chances of experiencing orthodontic relapse skyrocket significantly. So, make sure that you take good care of it and that you wear it as directed.
